Not many folks go to work each day thinking about what they can do to help someone overcome obstacles, but that’s exactly what Neal Peton does.
As a personal injury attorney in his own small law practice, Peton gets to make his clients his “top priority” and advocate for them at every turn. Nothing makes him feel better about his work than knowing he’s helping someone at what could be a low point in their lives.
“The majority of my cases involve motor-vehicle accidents and the negligent behavior that has caused someone’s life to be put into chaos,” Neal Peton said. “I get to try to help people during this time and move them from Point A to Point B. We’re a small shop, but if I can take a case and make a difference in someone’s life, then I look forward to the work.”
Peton Law specializes in personal injury law and represents many victims of motor vehicle accidents. The firm also handles cases of slips and falls, dog bites, pedestrian, and bicycle accidents, which often involve a vehicle, and some nursing-home cases as well.
A broad category of law, personal injury includes automobile or truck accidents, public transit accidents, airline accidents, workplace accident, a construction site injury, use of unsafe or faulty products and others.
“I figure the insurance companies have attorneys working steadily for them, it’s about time the average guy had an expert working for them as well,” Peton said. “The average person definitely needs to have someone in their corner and I love being that person.”
Personal injury isn’t always physical in nature; the injury could also be psychological. A psychological injury might involve any number of physical injuries and may manifest as mood or emotional injuries (such as depression, anxiety, or chronic fear), or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The cause of a psychological injury can result from: life-threatening or disfiguring physical injury, witnessing close family members experience trauma (also called bystander trauma), narrowly escaping serious injury following a traumatic event, the exacerbation of a pre-existing condition due to negligence or injury, loss from inability to do what was done before the accident, or loss from being able to work as one did before the accident.
Peton Law can help clients get help with medical bills, future medical bills, lost income, vacation, sick or personal time, pain and suffering, disfigurement/dismemberment, emotional injury, wrongful death, property damage and diminished value of a vehicle.
Peton started his law firm in 2019, and it has been growing steadily from its Keizer location. He has one paralegal working for him, and it’s not unusual for him to answer his own phone. There is no answering service, so Peton encourages folks to leave a message or send him an email if they’re trying to get a hold of him.
He does most of his own research and considers that background work a real advantage when it comes to representing his clients.
“It lets me become involved in the cases in many ways a bigger firm might miss,” Peton said. “We don’t have a phone tree either. If someone calls after hours, they should leave a message or send us an email. We will get back to them promptly.”
One of the other differences that set Peton Law apart from larger firms is that Peton doesn’t believe in wasting people’s time.
He is often candid with a potential client during their free consultation.
“I appreciate honesty and while not unique, I think it’s important not to mislead someone,” Peton said. “If I don’t think it would be a successful case, then I tell the person that. If I don’t think I can win, I tell them.”
He also puts a premium on being personable. His goal is to always be hopeful when people meet him for the first time.
“I envision myself as someone who doesn’t think twice about giving someone a helping hand,” Peton said. “If I can do that, then I know I’ve really succeeded.”
